Set in the years of the Second World War, between 1940 and 1945, this moving story charts the life of one family in Liverpool. Emily is a young mother, with two little daughters, whose husband, Jimmy is in the Navy, pursuing U-boats far out in the Atlantic Ocean. She does a little cleaning at the local vicarage, but the long-standing housekeeper's retirement unexpectedly catapults her into this responsible position.

Moments of tragedy and also treasured moments of happiness are used to reveal a strong community. As war draws to a close, much in Emily's life has changed, yet she still nurtures the wish to emigrate to Canada and to start a new life ...

Although this story is fictional, Billy Forshaw has drawn on many historical sources , national as well as local, including eyewitness accounts, to ensure accuracy in his portrayal of the wartime atmosphere. The reader is given a real sense of the hardships and anxieties suffered during this time of conflict. Humour obviously playing a great part in helping everyone to cope.
